Research essays are due next class meeting. Work in pairs to research the answer to only one essay topic of your choice. One student may concentrate on one aspect of the question and the second student on another. Discuss possible answers and learn from one another. However at the end, each student must write one’s own-word essay, and include one’s partner’s name too. Therefore, experience the benefits of team work, but write an individual essay. The students begin the collaborative work of researching and generally preparing for an essay on the research day, but have until next class meeting to finish up and submit their individual essay. Essay topics are chosen from each professor's thematic path, or from overlapping thematic paths, or by connecting a thematic path with students' community service projects. Through their research, students will be able to make connections between professors' themes and social responsibility, as well as their community service project. The latter will result in the sharing of the community service experience with their professors and classmates (especially during oral presentations).

An essay must be typed, double-spaced, a minimum of two pages long but not to exceed four, (not including figures, tables of data, title and works cited pages), in font size 11, type Calibri, and with margins 1 inch long and justification left. You must use a minimum of three scholarly references. You may quote, paraphrase, but must credit borrowed material with in-text citations and a works cited page. Only those works actually used in the development of your paper (that is, directly quoted or paraphrased) are cited in the Works Cited page. You may use a variety of references such as from the Internet, your assigned books, other books, handouts, academic journals, information from government reports, statistical databases, etc. Encyclopedias (i.e., wikipedia) are not appropriate for college research, thus may not be used.

A student who does not show up during a research day will receive an F for the essay of that day. Also the essay of a student who comes to class late or leaves early, will be severely downgraded.

Therefore, use part of today's class to practice your collaborative oral presentation. Due on the last day is also your community service report. Late assignments are not accepted.
